Did you guys read the story about the Logs that have been sunk in the silty bottom of the Flathead Lake for a VERY long time ? This Logs are Pine, Larch, and Douglas Fir.. they are Large Diameter Logs and must make gorgeous lumber. The North Shore Development off Flathead Log wants to get these logs and the State of Montana says No. Well money talks, and the North Shore Developers have Good Attorneys, they fought to keep the logs and have the right to remove them. Apparantly the logs are stamped as owned by a certain mill back in the day, the Development Company followed the "Chain of Title" and they now get to salvage these underwater logs. They have to pay $21,000 a year for the "Salvage Rights".
Plus with no oxygen on these logs, WoW.. I bet they are gorgeous.
...underwater logging ...
It’s been in the works for about
three years, but now the state is
advancing a proposal for public
review on a project that involves
salvaging long-lost logs from the
bottom of Somers Bay
in Flathead Lake.
The Montana Department of
Natural Resources and Conservation
is taking initial public input
on the proposal from North Shore
Development. What’s next is an
environmental assessment and
ultimately a land-use permit for
the logs to be salvaged from the
state-owned lake bed.
North Shore initially proposed
the salvage project around 2006
and received a permit to proceed
from the state Department of
Environmental Quality.
